Between shop visits
Note the mileage when each service is done, so you know when the next is due. Do not ignore a warning light; an early check often costs less than a late repair. Keep the spare, the jack and the wheel lock key where you can find them.
A short checklist
If the car must stay overnight, ask where it will be kept. Ask whether anything else is close to needing attention, and how soon. Ask how the shop takes payment before you pick the car up. Ask for the work to be listed line by line on the invoice.
