Check the tire pressure once a month, when the tires are cold. Wash the underside of the car in winter to clear road salt. Follow the maintenance schedule in your owner's manual, by time or distance.

Talking to the shop

Ask how long the job should take, so you know how long to rent for. If the car must stay overnight, ask where it will be kept. Ask whether the shop will check anything related while the car is there. Ask what warranty the shop gives on its parts and labour.
