Before the shop starts

Ask for the work to be listed line by line on the invoice. If a warning light was the reason, ask what the code was and what fixed it. Ask if the shop needs the car for a full day or only a few hours. Ask whether the quote includes both parts and labour.

Between shop visits

Keep an emergency kit in the trunk in winter. Look at the tire tread before long trips. Follow the maintenance schedule in your owner's manual, by time or distance.
