Look for rust under the doors and around the wheel arches. Ask whether the car has been in an accident and how it was repaired. Check the tires and brakes: replacing them adds to the real price. Have a mechanic inspect a used car before you buy it, at a shop you choose.

While you shop

A rental keeps you driving if your old car sells sooner than planned. If the car you want is weeks away, rent one month at a time and stop when it arrives. Between selling and buying, a weekly rental keeps the commute normal.
