Renting the model first is a simple way to avoid buying the wrong car. Take the car home, load it with your things, park it where you park, and then decide. A rental lets you judge fuel use for yourself, on your own routes.

A buyer's checklist

Ask whether the car has been in an accident and how it was repaired. Ask for a test drive on the highway as well as in town. Check open recalls with Transport Canada or the maker, using the VIN. Compare the total cost, not only the monthly payment: interest, fees and insurance add up.

A car meanwhile

Renting while you shop lets you compare cars without pressure. If the purchase falls through, you still have a car to drive. There is no long contract: each booking runs up to 365 days and can be renewed.
