Have a mechanic inspect a used car before you buy it, at a shop you choose. Ask for a test drive on the highway as well as in town. Make sure every warning light goes out after the car starts. Confirm the ownership and that no money is still owed on the car.

Between selling and buying, a weekly rental keeps the commute normal. Use a rental to try a different kind of car before you commit to one. Selling privately can take time; a rental means no rush.
