Ask for a test drive on the highway as well as in town. Check the date on the tires and the condition of the brakes. In Ontario, a private seller must give the buyer a Used Vehicle Information Package. Ask whether the car has been in an accident and how it was repaired.

A car meanwhile

If the purchase falls through, you still have a car to drive. Rent the kind of car you plan to buy while you shop for it. If the car you want is weeks away, rent one month at a time and stop when it arrives.
