Thinking of buying the 2015 Tesla Model S?

CarmaCars is a rental company and does not have the 2015 Tesla Model S for sale right now. Rent one for a week first, or ask us to look for one. Before you buy the 2015 Tesla Model S, see the figures and the checks worth doing.

What to check on the Model S

A private seller in Ontario must give you a Used Vehicle Information Package. NHTSA has 668 owner complaints on file, mostly about electrical system, unknown or other and suspension. Check whether every recall was done, by the VIN, before you pay. In Ontario, a used car needs a Safety Standards Certificate to be registered.

What the figures tell you

Power: the electric motor; drive: all-wheel drive. It is fully electric: no gas at all, and you return it with the charge it had at pickup. With all-wheel drive, it pulls away more surely on slippery roads, though it does not stop any shorter.

It uses 21.5 kWh per 100 km, so 300 km takes about 65 kWh of charge. On paper it goes 435 km between charges, less in winter. The electricity for 100 km comes to about $3.23 at our price setting. EPA puts its fuel cost at US$770 a year for 15,000 miles at US prices.

What the Model S is like

Its car body is low and settled, with a separate trunk. The trunk holds 736 litres by the EPA's count: bulky luggage, a stroller or sports gear.

Is it right for your trip?

It suits a stretch of weeks between selling one car and buying the next. It suits a weekend away when the train does not reach where you are going.

Rent it for a week first

Rent first, buy later: a week with the Model S answers the big questions. Rent the Model S first, and buy only if it fits your life. Drive the Model S on your commute before you commit to it.

What it costs to run

At our price setting, 100 km costs about $3.23 in electricity. Tires, brakes and batteries are the regular costs to budget for beyond fuel. The EPA estimates US$770 a year in fuel for 15,000 miles at US prices.

Which one to look for

Ask the seller which trim it is; badges can be swapped and options vary. Within the 2015 lineup, trims share powertrains or differ in equipment; the trim pages show which. Set a budget that includes tax, licensing, insurance and the first set of tires.
