Thinking of buying the 2020 Tesla Model S?

We are a rental company, not a dealer, so there is no 2020 Tesla Model S for sale by us right now. The 2020 Tesla Model S for buyers: what the numbers say, what to check, how to try it.

What to check on the Model S

There are 10 NHTSA recall campaigns on file; a dealer can check by the VIN whether each was done. Check whether every recall was done, by the VIN, before you pay. Look at the tires, brakes and battery; they are costly to replace. Owners filed 80 complaints with NHTSA, most often about forward collision avoidance, suspension and unknown or other; have those parts checked.

Reading the spec sheet

The electric motor with all-wheel drive is the powertrain to look at. It is fully electric: no gas at all, and you return it with the charge it had at pickup. All-wheel drive sends power to all four wheels, which helps on snow and wet roads; good tires still matter most.

At 19.5 kWh/100 km, a 300 km day uses roughly 59 kWh. On paper it goes 647 km between charges, less in winter. That works out to about $2.93 per 100 km at our price setting. At US fuel prices, the EPA estimates US$720 a year for 15,000 miles.

Space, size and seats

Its car body is low and settled, with a separate trunk. With 736 litres of luggage space by the EPA's measure, it takes bulky luggage, a stroller or sports gear.

When the Model S makes sense

It suits visitors who want a familiar car for a week in town. It suits client visits, weddings and special weekends.

Drive it on your own roads

A week of your own driving tells you more than a test drive: the commute, the parking, the fuel. Renting first costs a fraction of the price of buying the wrong car. Rent the Model S for a week, or up to 365 days, before you commit to buying one.

Money matters

Get an insurance quote for this exact model before you buy; rates differ a lot between models. Ask what a set of tires costs for this trim; sizes and prices vary. A pre-purchase inspection is a small cost next to the price of the car.

Picking a year and a trim

A newer year is not always better; check what changed before paying more for it. Look at a few listings of the same year and trim to get a feel for fair prices. If two trims share a powertrain, the difference is equipment, which you can check in person.
