Make sure every warning light goes out after the car starts. Have a mechanic inspect a used car before you buy it, at a shop you choose.

A rental can carry you through the paperwork of a private sale. If the purchase falls through, you still have a car to drive. If the car you want is weeks away, rent one month at a time and stop when it arrives.
