    Specs, explained

It runs the 2.0L 4-cylinder turbo, with front-wheel drive. It calls for premium gas, which costs more a litre than regular. With front-wheel drive, the weight of the engine sits over the driven wheels, which helps in winter.

The combined figure, 7.9 L/100 km, means roughly 24 litres for 300 km. In energy, every 100 km costs about $13.83 at our price setting. The EPA estimates US$2,750 a year in fuel for 15,000 miles.

    Who rents the A4

It suits visitors who want a familiar car for a week in town. It suits a family trip where everyone and everything fits in one car.

    Living with the A4

As a compact car, it is easy to drive and park in the city. The length is 4.76 m. Check the size of a tight parking spot. The trunk holds 368 litres by the EPA's count: about two large suitcases and a few soft bags.

    A longer test drive

Rent it, live with it for a week, and decide with real experience. Rent the A4 for a week and see how it fits your life. Load it with your things and park it where you park; then decide.

    Which one to look for

Set a budget that includes tax, licensing, insurance and the first set of tires. If two trims share a powertrain, the difference is equipment, which you can check in person. If you are unsure between two options, rent one of them for a week first.

    Running costs

Tires, brakes and batteries are the regular costs to budget for beyond fuel. Ask what a set of tires costs for this trim; sizes and prices vary. The EPA estimates US$2,750 a year in fuel for 15,000 miles at US prices.

    Java and the A4

Java is about 1,639 km from our Toronto location, beyond the area we deliver to. We rent from Toronto only. If your trip to Java starts in the Toronto area, rent the car here.
