Auto loans: the 2016 Chevrolet Malibu LS

We rent cars and sell one only now and then. There is no 2016 Chevrolet Malibu LS for sale by us right now. We are not a lender and do not arrange loans. A monthly rental can cover the time while you arrange financing with your bank. Buying the 2016 Chevrolet Malibu LS is a big decision; here is the information we have.

What to check on the Malibu

Look at the tires, brakes and battery; they are costly to replace. A private seller in Ontario must give you a Used Vehicle Information Package. Ask the seller for the service records of this exact car. Check whether every recall was done, by the VIN, before you pay.

What the figures tell you

It uses the 1.5L 4-cylinder turbo and front-wheel drive. The turbo gives a small engine the pull of a bigger one when you need it. Front-wheel drive is the usual layout for cars this size, predictable in the rain and the snow.

For 300 km of mixed driving, expect about 23 litres, from its 7.8 L/100 km rating. A 300 km weekend costs about $36.27 in energy at our price setting. The EPA estimates US$2,250 a year in fuel for 15,000 miles.

What the Malibu is like

Being a mid-size car, it is easy to park and comfortable on longer drives. It is 4.92 m long. Check the size of a tight parking spot. EPA lists 368 litres of luggage space, enough for about two large suitcases and a few soft bags.

A good match for

It suits visitors who want a familiar car for a week in town. It suits a family trip where everyone and everything fits in one car.

Rent it for a week first

Nothing is charged until we confirm the rental and you approve the offer. If the Malibu is in our fleet, its page shows the rates; if not, a similar car helps you judge. Drive the Malibu on your commute before you commit to it.

What it costs to run

The EPA estimates US$2,250 a year in fuel for 15,000 miles at US prices. A pre-purchase inspection is a small cost next to the price of the car. Ask what a set of tires costs for this trim; sizes and prices vary.

Choosing the right one

Write down the VIN of any car you consider; it unlocks the recall and service history. If you are unsure between two options, rent one of them for a week first. Ask the seller which trim it is; badges can be swapped and options vary.
