Auto loans: the 2017 Tesla Model X
CarmaCars rents cars and does not sell the 2017 Tesla Model X; this page helps you judge it before you buy one elsewhere. CarmaCars does not finance cars. Renting is not a loan, so there is no credit check to rent. Buying the 2017 Tesla Model X is a big decision; here is the information we have.
Recalls and complaints
Have a mechanic inspect a used one before you buy it. Owners filed 268 complaints with NHTSA, most often about electrical system, suspension and steering; have those parts checked. A private seller in Ontario must give you a Used Vehicle Information Package. Look at the tires, brakes and battery; they are costly to replace.
What the specs mean
The electric motor, paired with a 1-speed automatic, drives it. Being electric, it is quiet and quick from a stop, and it charges at home, at work or at public chargers. With all-wheel drive, it pulls away more surely on slippery roads, though it does not stop any shorter.
It uses 23.3 kWh per 100 km, so 300 km takes about 70 kWh of charge. Its rated range is 475 km on a full charge; real range drops in cold weather and at highway speeds. For 1,000 km, budget about $35 at our price setting. EPA puts its fuel cost at US$842 a year for 15,000 miles at US prices.
The Model X in everyday use
Being a full-size SUV, it handles luggage, strollers and sports gear well.
Who the Model X suits
It suits client visits, weddings and special weekends. It suits visitors who want a familiar car for a week in town.
A longer test drive
Drive the Model X on your commute before you commit to it. Rent the Model X first, and buy only if it fits your life. A week with the Model X answers more than any brochure.
Money matters
Ask what a set of tires costs for this trim; sizes and prices vary. Charging at home usually costs less than public fast charging. Get an insurance quote for this exact model before you buy; rates differ a lot between models.
Narrowing it down
Set a budget that includes tax, licensing, insurance and the first set of tires. If two trims share a powertrain, the difference is equipment, which you can check in person. Within the 2017 lineup, trims share powertrains or differ in equipment; the trim pages show which.
