Ask the shop to explain the repair in plain words before you agree. Ask how the shop takes payment before you pick the car up. Ask for the work to be listed line by line on the invoice.
Between shop visits
Listen for new noises and mention them to the shop with as much detail as you can. Look at the tire tread before long trips. Keep the fuel tank above a quarter in winter.
