Before you sign for the A4

NHTSA has 158 owner complaints on file, mostly about electrical system, back over prevention and unknown or other. A private seller in Ontario must give you a Used Vehicle Information Package. NHTSA lists 3 recall campaigns for this model; ask the seller for proof each one was fixed. A pre-purchase inspection at a shop you choose is money well spent.

Engine and fuel

The 2.0L 4-cylinder turbo, paired with a 7-speed automatic, drives it. The turbo gives a small engine the pull of a bigger one when you need it. Front-wheel drive is the usual layout for cars this size, predictable in the rain and the snow.

For 300 km of mixed driving, expect about 24 litres, from its 7.9 L/100 km rating. In energy, every 100 km costs about $13.83 at our price setting. The EPA estimates US$2,750 a year in fuel for 15,000 miles.

Good uses for the A4

It suits a family trip where everyone and everything fits in one car. It suits a stretch of weeks between selling one car and buying the next.

How big it is

It is a straightforward car to drive, park and live with. It is 4.76 m from end to end. Check the size of a tight parking spot. At 368 litres, the trunk fits about two large suitcases and a few soft bags.

A longer test drive

A week of your own driving tells you more than a test drive: the commute, the parking, the fuel. Nothing is charged until we confirm the rental and you approve the offer. Rent the A4 for a week, or up to 365 days, before you commit to buying one.

Narrowing it down

If two trims share a powertrain, the difference is equipment, which you can check in person. Look at a few listings of the same year and trim to get a feel for fair prices. If you are unsure between two options, rent one of them for a week first.

Running costs

At our price setting, 100 km costs about $13.83 in fuel. The EPA estimates US$2,750 a year in fuel for 15,000 miles at US prices. Ask what a set of tires costs for this trim; sizes and prices vary.

The A4 and Congleton
