Before you sign for the Carnival

Look at the tires, brakes and battery; they are costly to replace. NHTSA lists 2 recall campaigns for this model; ask the seller for proof each one was fixed. A private seller in Ontario must give you a Used Vehicle Information Package. Ask for the service records and check open recalls by the VIN.

Specs, explained

The 3.5L 6-cylinder, paired with an 8-speed automatic, drives it. It runs on regular gas. With front-wheel drive, the weight of the engine sits over the driven wheels, which helps in winter.

Its combined rating is 10.7 L/100 km, which means roughly 32 litres for 300 km. In energy, every 100 km costs about $16.59 at our price setting. At US fuel prices, the EPA estimates US$3,050 a year for 15,000 miles.

Living with the Carnival

It is the kind of vehicle that makes a family trip calmer.

Good uses for the Carnival

It suits a stretch of weeks between selling one car and buying the next. It suits groups, airport runs with luggage and family trips.

Try before you buy

Try the Carnival on your commute, then decide. Rent first, buy later: a week with the Carnival answers the big questions. A week of your own driving tells you more than a test drive: the commute, the parking, the fuel.

The cost of driving it

Ask what a set of tires costs for this trim; sizes and prices vary. The EPA estimates US$3,050 a year in fuel for 15,000 miles at US prices. A pre-purchase inspection is a small cost next to the price of the car.

Year and trim

Look at a few listings of the same year and trim to get a feel for fair prices. Ask the seller which trim it is; badges can be swapped and options vary. Write down the VIN of any car you consider; it unlocks the recall and service history.

Send a request

Rent it for a week, then decide: send a request with your dates.
