Recalls and complaints

NHTSA lists 3 recall campaigns for this model; ask the seller for proof each one was fixed. Owners filed 158 complaints with NHTSA, most often about electrical system, back over prevention and unknown or other; have those parts checked. Ask for the service records and check open recalls by the VIN. A pre-purchase inspection at a shop you choose is money well spent.

Reading the spec sheet

Its powertrain is the 2.0L 4-cylinder turbo with front-wheel drive. The turbo gives a small engine the pull of a bigger one when you need it. Front-wheel drive is the usual layout for cars this size, predictable in the rain and the snow.

By the EPA's combined rating of 7.9 L/100 km, 300 km takes about 24 litres. At our price setting, it costs about $13.83 to drive 100 km. At US fuel prices, the EPA estimates US$2,750 a year for 15,000 miles.

Good uses for the A4

It suits a stretch of weeks between selling one car and buying the next. It suits client visits, weddings and special weekends.

Inside and out

A car body like this keeps the weight low, so it feels settled on the highway. Its length is 4.76 m, so it is on the long side. Check the size of a tight parking spot. Its 368 litre trunk is enough for about two large suitcases and a few soft bags.

Rent it for a week first

Drive the A4 on your commute before you commit to it. If the A4 is in our fleet, its page shows the rates; if not, a similar car helps you judge. Rent first, buy later: a week with the A4 answers the big questions.

Picking a year and a trim

Decide what matters most first: fuel use, space, or the price you can pay. Write down the VIN of any car you consider; it unlocks the recall and service history. Set a budget that includes tax, licensing, insurance and the first set of tires.

What it costs to run

Tires, brakes and batteries are the regular costs to budget for beyond fuel. Ask what a set of tires costs for this trim; sizes and prices vary. At our price setting, 100 km costs about $13.83 in fuel.
