The 2020 Toyota Corolla XSE: before you buy

CarmaCars is a rental company and does not have the 2020 Toyota Corolla XSE for sale right now. Rent one for a week first, or ask us to look for one. We do not lease cars. A monthly rental has no long contract: each booking runs up to 365 days. Before you buy the 2020 Toyota Corolla XSE, here is what the figures say and what to look at.

Before you sign for the Corolla

NHTSA has 314 owner complaints on file, mostly about engine, unknown or other and power train. Have a mechanic inspect a used one before you buy it. In Ontario, a used car needs a Safety Standards Certificate to be registered. Look at the tires, brakes and battery; they are costly to replace.

    The numbers in plain words

Under the hood: the 2.0L 4-cylinder and front-wheel drive. It runs on regular gas. Front-wheel drive is the usual layout for cars this size, predictable in the rain and the snow.

It is rated at 7.1 L/100 km combined; 300 km takes about 21 litres. At our price setting, 1,000 km costs about $110.10. EPA puts its fuel cost at US$2,000 a year for 15,000 miles at US prices.

    The Corolla in everyday use

It is a straightforward car to drive, park and live with. Luggage space is 510 litres, enough for a family's bags for a long weekend.

    Who it is for

It suits anyone who needs a car for a few days, a week or a month without buying one. It suits a family trip where everyone and everything fits in one car.

    Try before you buy

If it is in our fleet, rent it; if not, a similar car gives you a feel for the class. If the Corolla is in our fleet, its page shows the rates; if not, a similar car helps you judge. A week of your own driving tells you more than a test drive: the commute, the parking, the fuel.

    Running costs

The EPA estimates US$2,000 a year in fuel for 15,000 miles at US prices. Get an insurance quote for this exact model before you buy; rates differ a lot between models. Ask what a set of tires costs for this trim; sizes and prices vary.

    Which one to look for

A newer year is not always better; check what changed before paying more for it. If two trims share a powertrain, the difference is equipment, which you can check in person. Look at a few listings of the same year and trim to get a feel for fair prices.
