Ask how long the job should take, so you know how long to rent for. Ask whether the shop will check anything related while the car is there. Ask the shop to explain the repair in plain words before you agree.
Small things that help
Wash the underside of the car in winter to clear road salt. Keep the spare, the jack and the wheel lock key where you can find them. Check the tire pressure once a month, when the tires are cold.
