Keep the fuel tank above a quarter in winter. Wash the underside of the car in winter to clear road salt. Check that all lights work every few weeks.
A short checklist
Ask how the shop takes payment before you pick the car up. Ask how the shop will contact you if it finds something unexpected. Ask the shop to explain the repair in plain words before you agree.
