Ask how long the job should take, so you know how long to rent for. Ask the shop to call you before doing anything not on the estimate. Ask how the shop will contact you if it finds something unexpected.

Switch to winter tires before the first snow, and back in spring. Check the tire pressure once a month, when the tires are cold. Follow the maintenance schedule in your owner's manual, by time or distance.
