Have the cabin air filter changed on the maker's schedule. Keep an emergency kit in the trunk in winter. Follow the maintenance schedule in your owner's manual, by time or distance.
Talking to the shop
Keep the invoice; it is part of the car's service history. Ask for the work to be listed line by line on the invoice. If a warning light was the reason, ask what the code was and what fixed it.
