The 2021 Toyota Corolla SE for buyers

We rent cars and sell one only now and then. There is no 2021 Toyota Corolla SE for sale by us right now. Here is what to know about the 2021 Toyota Corolla SE before buying one.

What to check on the Corolla

A pre-purchase inspection at a shop you choose is money well spent. Check whether every recall was done, by the VIN, before you pay. A private seller in Ontario must give you a Used Vehicle Information Package. Ask the seller for the service records of this exact car.

    Reading the spec sheet

The 2.0L 4-cylinder is what moves it, with front-wheel drive. It runs on regular gas. With front-wheel drive, the weight of the engine sits over the driven wheels, which helps in winter.

Rated at 6.6 L/100 km combined, it needs around 20 litres for a 300 km round trip. Driving 300 km costs roughly $30.69 at our price setting. EPA puts its fuel cost at US$1,900 a year for 15,000 miles at US prices.

    Size and space

It is a straightforward car to drive, park and live with. For luggage, 510 litres means a family's bags for a long weekend.

    A good match for

It suits a weekend away when the train does not reach where you are going. It suits visitors who want a familiar car for a week in town.

Rent it for a week first

Rent the Corolla first, and buy only if it fits your life. A week with the Corolla answers more than any brochure. Drive the Corolla on your commute before you commit to it.

    What it costs to run

The EPA estimates US$1,900 a year in fuel for 15,000 miles at US prices. Get an insurance quote for this exact model before you buy; rates differ a lot between models. At our price setting, 100 km costs about $10.23 in fuel.

    Which one to look for

Write down the VIN of any car you consider; it unlocks the recall and service history. Set a budget that includes tax, licensing, insurance and the first set of tires. A newer year is not always better; check what changed before paying more for it.
