Buying the 2021 Audi A4 Technik

CarmaCars rents cars and does not sell the 2021 Audi A4 Technik; this page helps you judge it before you buy one elsewhere. Here is what to know about the 2021 Audi A4 Technik before buying one.

What to check on the A4

Have a mechanic inspect a used one before you buy it. In Ontario, a used car needs a Safety Standards Certificate to be registered. Ask for the service records and check open recalls by the VIN. Look at the tires, brakes and battery; they are costly to replace.

What the figures tell you

It uses the 2.0L 4-cylinder turbo hybrid and all-wheel drive. As a hybrid, it does best in stop-and-go traffic, where the electric motor does more of the work. All-wheel drive sends power to all four wheels, which helps on snow and wet roads; good tires still matter most.

Combined fuel use is 8.3 L/100 km: about 25 litres for 300 km. A 300 km weekend costs about $38.61 in energy at our price setting. The EPA estimates US$2,950 a year in fuel for 15,000 miles.

Who it is for

It suits a stretch between cars, by the week or the month. It suits a weekend away when the train does not reach where you are going.

What the A4 is like

It is a straightforward car to drive, park and live with. At 340 litres, the trunk fits about two large suitcases and a few soft bags.

Drive it on your own roads

Rent it, live with it for a week, and decide with real experience. If it is in our fleet, rent it; if not, a similar car gives you a feel for the class. Load it with your things and park it where you park; then decide.

Choosing the right one

Decide what matters most first: fuel use, space, or the price you can pay. A newer year is not always better; check what changed before paying more for it. If two trims share a powertrain, the difference is equipment, which you can check in person.

The cost of driving it

The EPA estimates US$2,950 a year in fuel for 15,000 miles at US prices. Ask what a set of tires costs for this trim; sizes and prices vary. At our price setting, 100 km costs about $12.87 in fuel.
