The 2016 Honda Civic DX for buyers

We rent cars and sell one only now and then. There is no 2016 Honda Civic DX for sale by us right now. The 2016 Honda Civic DX for buyers: what the numbers say, what to check, how to try it.

    A buyer's checks

NHTSA lists 5 recall campaigns for this model; ask the seller for proof each one was fixed. Look at the tires, brakes and battery; they are costly to replace. In Ontario, a used car needs a Safety Standards Certificate to be registered. Ask the seller for the service records of this exact car.

    The numbers in plain words

The powertrain to know here is the 1.5L 4-cylinder turbo, with front-wheel drive. The turbo gives a small engine the pull of a bigger one when you need it. With front-wheel drive, the weight of the engine sits over the driven wheels, which helps in winter.

For 300 km of mixed driving, expect about 20 litres, from its 6.7 L/100 km rating. A weekend of 300 km comes to about $31.17 at our price setting. EPA puts its fuel cost at US$1,900 a year for 15,000 miles at US prices.

    Size and space

A car body like this keeps the weight low, so it feels settled on the highway. EPA lists 425 litres of luggage space, enough for a family's bags for a long weekend.

Is it right for your trip?

It suits commuters, couples and business trips. It suits a stretch of weeks between selling one car and buying the next.

    Narrowing it down

Compare the DX with the other trims of the same year before you decide. Ask the seller which trim it is; badges can be swapped and options vary. Set a budget that includes tax, licensing, insurance and the first set of tires.
