    Specs, explained

Its 1.5L 4-cylinder turbo drives through an automatic (CVT). It runs on regular gas. With front-wheel drive, the weight of the engine sits over the driven wheels, which helps in winter.

Fuel use is rated 6.9 L/100 km combined, so 300 km needs about 21 litres. Every 100 km costs about $10.70 in fuel at our price setting. EPA puts its fuel cost at US$1,960 a year for 15,000 miles at US prices.

    The Civic in everyday use

A car body like this keeps the weight low, so it feels settled on the highway. The EPA lists 736 litres for luggage, roughly bulky luggage, a stroller or sports gear.

    Good uses for the Civic

It suits anyone who needs a car for a few days, a week or a month without buying one. It suits commuters, couples and business trips.

Drive it on your own roads

If it is in our fleet, rent it; if not, a similar car gives you a feel for the class. Rent the Civic for a week and see how it fits your life. A week of your own driving tells you more than a test drive: the commute, the parking, the fuel.

    Money matters

Ask what a set of tires costs for this trim; sizes and prices vary. The EPA estimates US$1,960 a year in fuel for 15,000 miles at US prices. At our price setting, 100 km costs about $10.70 in fuel.

Picking a year and a trim

Look at a few listings of the same year and trim to get a feel for fair prices. Set a budget that includes tax, licensing, insurance and the first set of tires. Decide what matters most first: fuel use, space, or the price you can pay.
