The 2021 Honda Civic Type R for buyers

    A buyer's checks

In Ontario, a used car needs a Safety Standards Certificate to be registered. Have a mechanic inspect a used one before you buy it. Look at the tires, brakes and battery; they are costly to replace. NHTSA lists 4 recall campaigns for this model; ask the seller for proof each one was fixed.

    Engine and fuel

The powertrain here is the 1.5L 4-cylinder turbo with front-wheel drive and an automatic (CVT). The turbo gives a small engine the pull of a bigger one when you need it. With front-wheel drive, the weight of the engine sits over the driven wheels, which helps in winter.

Combined fuel use is 6.9 L/100 km: about 21 litres for 300 km. The fuel for 100 km comes to about $10.70 at our price setting. EPA puts its fuel cost at US$1,950 a year for 15,000 miles at US prices.

    Best uses

It suits a weekend away when the train does not reach where you are going. It suits visitors who want a familiar car for a week in town.

    Space and size

A car body like this keeps the weight low, so it feels settled on the highway. Luggage space is rated at 736 litres: bulky luggage, a stroller or sports gear.

Drive it on your own roads

Renting first costs a fraction of the price of buying the wrong car. Drive the Civic on your commute before you commit to it. A week with the Civic answers more than any brochure.

    Which one to look for

Set a budget that includes tax, licensing, insurance and the first set of tires. Compare the Type R with the other trims of the same year before you decide. Look at a few listings of the same year and trim to get a feel for fair prices.

    The cost of driving it

A 1,000 km month costs roughly $107 at our price setting. Ask what a set of tires costs for this trim; sizes and prices vary. The EPA estimates US$1,950 a year in fuel for 15,000 miles at US prices.
