What to check before you buy

Check open recalls with Transport Canada or the maker, using the VIN. Look for rust under the doors and around the wheel arches. Read the contract before you sign, and ask about every fee you do not understand. Compare the total cost, not only the monthly payment: interest, fees and insurance add up.

A car meanwhile

If the purchase falls through, you still have a car to drive. Renting while you shop lets you compare cars without pressure. A rental keeps you driving if your old car sells sooner than planned.
