In Ontario, a private seller must give the buyer a Used Vehicle Information Package. For a used car, ask for the vehicle's service records and look up its recall history by the VIN.

Bridging the gap

There is no long contract, so a rental fits around any purchase date. A rental can carry you through the paperwork of a private sale. A rental keeps you driving if your old car sells sooner than planned.
