Before you sign for the Kicks

NHTSA has 78 owner complaints on file, mostly about structure, forward collision avoidance and unknown or other. There are 2 NHTSA recall campaigns on file; a dealer can check by the VIN whether each was done.

    Specs, explained

Power: the 1.6L 4-cylinder; drive: front-wheel drive. It runs on regular gas. With front-wheel drive, the weight of the engine sits over the driven wheels, which helps in winter.

Fuel use is rated 7.1 L/100 km combined, so 300 km needs about 21 litres. In energy, every 100 km costs about $11.01 at our price setting. At US fuel prices, the EPA estimates US$2,050 a year for 15,000 miles.

    When the Kicks makes sense

It suits a stretch between cars, by the week or the month. It suits commuters, couples and business trips.

    Practical details

As a mid-size car, it is easy to drive and park in the city. Luggage space is 708 litres, enough for bulky luggage, a stroller or sports gear.

    A longer test drive

A week with the Kicks answers more than any brochure. Drive the Kicks on your commute before you commit to it. If it is in our fleet, rent it; if not, a similar car gives you a feel for the class.

    Year and trim

Decide what matters most first: fuel use, space, or the price you can pay. Look at a few listings of the same year and trim to get a feel for fair prices. A newer year is not always better; check what changed before paying more for it.

    What it costs to run

A 1,000 km month costs roughly $110.10 at our price setting. Tires, brakes and batteries are the regular costs to budget for beyond fuel. Get an insurance quote for this exact model before you buy; rates differ a lot between models.
