    Specs, explained

The 2.5L 4-cylinder with all-wheel drive is the powertrain to look at. It runs on regular gas. All-wheel drive helps when pulling away on snow; braking and steering still depend on the tires.

It is rated 8.2 L/100 km combined: about 25 litres every 300 km. In energy, every 100 km costs about $12.71 at our price setting. At US fuel prices, the EPA estimates US$2,300 a year for 15,000 miles.

    Space, size and seats

The higher seat of a compact SUV gives a good view of the road in traffic.

    Best uses

It suits visitors who want a familiar car for a week in town. It suits a stretch of weeks between selling one car and buying the next.

Drive it on your own roads

Renting first costs a fraction of the price of buying the wrong car. Rent the Forester first, and buy only if it fits your life. Load it with your things and park it where you park; then decide.

    Running costs

The EPA estimates US$2,300 a year in fuel for 15,000 miles at US prices. Ask what a set of tires costs for this trim; sizes and prices vary. At our price setting, 100 km costs about $12.71 in fuel.

    Year and trim

Ask the seller which trim it is; badges can be swapped and options vary. Write down the VIN of any car you consider; it unlocks the recall and service history. Look at a few listings of the same year and trim to get a feel for fair prices.
