The 2017 Toyota Corolla XSE: before you buy

CarmaCars rents cars and does not sell the 2017 Toyota Corolla XSE; this page helps you judge it before you buy one elsewhere. This page sets out the 2017 Toyota Corolla XSE for buyers, in plain words.

Before you sign for the Corolla

NHTSA has 190 owner complaints on file, mostly about air bags, unknown or other and vehicle speed control. In Ontario, a used car needs a Safety Standards Certificate to be registered. Look at the tires, brakes and battery; they are costly to replace. A private seller in Ontario must give you a Used Vehicle Information Package.

    Reading the spec sheet

The 1.8L 4-cylinder is what moves it, with front-wheel drive. It runs on regular gas. With front-wheel drive, the weight of the engine sits over the driven wheels, which helps in winter.

By the EPA's combined rating of 7.6 L/100 km, 300 km takes about 23 litres. A 300 km round trip costs roughly $35.34 at our price setting. The EPA estimates US$2,125 a year in fuel for 15,000 miles.

    What the Corolla is like

Its car body is low and settled, with a separate trunk. For luggage, 368 litres means about two large suitcases and a few soft bags.

    Who rents the Corolla

It suits a stretch of weeks between selling one car and buying the next. It suits a work trip where a reliable car matters more than anything else.

    Try before you buy

A test week in the Corolla tells you more than any review. Nothing is charged until we confirm the rental and you approve the offer. A week with the Corolla answers more than any brochure.

    The cost of driving it

The EPA estimates US$2,125 a year in fuel for 15,000 miles at US prices. A pre-purchase inspection is a small cost next to the price of the car. At our price setting, 100 km costs about $11.78 in fuel.

    Choosing the right one

A newer year is not always better; check what changed before paying more for it. If two trims share a powertrain, the difference is equipment, which you can check in person. Write down the VIN of any car you consider; it unlocks the recall and service history.
