The 2021 Toyota Corolla L: before you buy

    A buyer's checks

There are 1 NHTSA recall campaigns on file; a dealer can check by the VIN whether each was done. Have a mechanic inspect a used one before you buy it.

    Specs, explained

The 2.0L 4-cylinder is what moves it, with front-wheel drive. It runs on regular gas. With front-wheel drive, the weight of the engine sits over the driven wheels, which helps in winter.

Its combined rating is 6.6 L/100 km, which means roughly 20 litres for 300 km. A 300 km round trip costs roughly $30.69 at our price setting. At US fuel prices, the EPA estimates US$1,900 a year for 15,000 miles.

What to expect from the Corolla

A car body like this keeps the weight low, so it feels settled on the highway. With 510 litres of luggage space by the EPA's measure, it takes a family's bags for a long weekend.

    Who rents the Corolla

It suits a family trip where everyone and everything fits in one car. It suits a stretch of weeks between selling one car and buying the next.

Drive it on your own roads

A week with the Corolla answers more than any brochure. A test week in the Corolla tells you more than any review. Rent the Corolla for a week, or up to 365 days, before you commit to buying one.

    What it costs to run

The EPA estimates US$1,900 a year in fuel for 15,000 miles at US prices. At our price setting, 100 km costs about $10.23 in fuel. Ask what a set of tires costs for this trim; sizes and prices vary.

    Which one to look for

Set a budget that includes tax, licensing, insurance and the first set of tires. If you are unsure between two options, rent one of them for a week first. Compare the L with the other trims of the same year before you decide.

    A note on Java

We rent from Toronto only. If your trip to Java starts in the Toronto area, rent the car here. Java is about 1,639 km from Toronto, outside our delivery area.
