Thinking of buying the 2021 Toyota Corolla SE?

CarmaCars rents cars and does not sell the 2021 Toyota Corolla SE; this page helps you judge it before you buy one elsewhere. Thinking about the 2021 Toyota Corolla SE? Here are the numbers in plain words and what to check.

    A buyer's checks

A pre-purchase inspection at a shop you choose is money well spent. A private seller in Ontario must give you a Used Vehicle Information Package. In Ontario, a used car needs a Safety Standards Certificate to be registered. Look at the tires, brakes and battery; they are costly to replace.

    The figures, translated

The powertrain here is the 2.0L 4-cylinder with front-wheel drive and a 10-speed automatic. It runs on regular gas. With front-wheel drive, the weight of the engine sits over the driven wheels, which helps in winter.

It is rated at 6.6 L/100 km combined; 300 km takes about 20 litres. A weekend of 300 km comes to about $30.69 at our price setting. EPA puts its fuel cost at US$1,900 a year for 15,000 miles at US prices.

    Practical details

Being a compact car, it is easy to park and comfortable on longer drives. At 510 litres, the trunk fits a family's bags for a long weekend.

    Who it is for

It suits commuters, couples and business trips. It suits anyone who needs a car for a few days, a week or a month without buying one.

    Try before you buy

Rent first, buy later: a week with the Corolla answers the big questions. A week of your own driving tells you more than a test drive: the commute, the parking, the fuel. If it is in our fleet, rent it; if not, a similar car gives you a feel for the class.

    Running costs

At our price setting, 100 km costs about $10.23 in fuel. Ask what a set of tires costs for this trim; sizes and prices vary. The EPA estimates US$1,900 a year in fuel for 15,000 miles at US prices.

    Year and trim

Set a budget that includes tax, licensing, insurance and the first set of tires. Ask the seller which trim it is; badges can be swapped and options vary. Look at a few listings of the same year and trim to get a feel for fair prices.
