    Specs, explained

It is powered by the 2.0L 4-cylinder, with front-wheel drive. It runs on regular gas. Front-wheel drive is the usual layout for cars this size, predictable in the rain and the snow.

It is rated at 7.0 L/100 km combined; 300 km takes about 21 litres. In energy, every 100 km costs about $10.85 at our price setting. EPA puts its fuel cost at US$1,950 a year for 15,000 miles at US prices.

    Who rents the Corolla

It suits commuters, couples and business trips. It suits a stretch between cars, by the week or the month.

    Space, size and seats

As a compact car, it has a closed trunk that keeps luggage out of sight. In plain terms, its 368 litres of luggage space hold about two large suitcases and a few soft bags.

    Try before you buy

A week with the Corolla answers more than any brochure. Rent the Corolla first, and buy only if it fits your life. Nothing is charged until we confirm the rental and you approve the offer.

    Which one to look for

Set a budget that includes tax, licensing, insurance and the first set of tires. Decide what matters most first: fuel use, space, or the price you can pay. If you are unsure between two options, rent one of them for a week first.

    Money matters

The EPA estimates US$1,950 a year in fuel for 15,000 miles at US prices. Ask what a set of tires costs for this trim; sizes and prices vary. Tires, brakes and batteries are the regular costs to budget for beyond fuel.
