The figures, translated

It uses the 2.0L 4-cylinder and front-wheel drive. It runs on regular gas. With front-wheel drive, the weight of the engine sits over the driven wheels, which helps in winter.

It is rated 7.0 L/100 km combined: about 21 litres every 300 km. Per 100 km, plan on roughly $10.85. EPA puts its fuel cost at US$1,950 a year for 15,000 miles at US prices.

Space, size and seats

Its car body is low and settled, with a separate trunk. In plain terms, its 368 litres of luggage space hold about two large suitcases and a few soft bags.

Who it is for

It suits someone whose own car is in the shop for a while. It suits a stretch between cars, by the week or the month.

Try before you buy

Rent it, live with it for a week, and decide with real experience. Rent the Corolla first, and buy only if it fits your life. Renting first costs a fraction of the price of buying the wrong car.

Money matters

Tires, brakes and batteries are the regular costs to budget for beyond fuel. Get an insurance quote for this exact model before you buy; rates differ a lot between models. The EPA estimates US$1,950 a year in fuel for 15,000 miles at US prices.

Picking a year and a trim

Write down the VIN of any car you consider; it unlocks the recall and service history. Set a budget that includes tax, licensing, insurance and the first set of tires. If you are unsure between two options, rent one of them for a week first.
