The CarmaCars Protection Plan is one of three options for damage to the car; the others are OPCF 27 on your policy or a card with rental car benefits. There is a deposit for each rental, taken shortly before pickup rather than at booking. The checks are the same for everyone: licence, identity and the agreement.
