Recalls and complaints

NHTSA has 81 owner complaints on file, mostly about electrical system, unknown or other and engine. NHTSA lists no recall campaign for this model year. A pre-purchase inspection at a shop you choose is money well spent. Look at the tires, brakes and battery; they are costly to replace.

The numbers in plain words

Its 2.4L 4-cylinder drives through a 6-speed automatic. It runs on regular gas. Front-wheel drive is the usual layout for cars this size, predictable in the rain and the snow.

It is rated 9.3 L/100 km combined: about 28 litres every 300 km. Per 100 km, plan on roughly $14.42. At US fuel prices, the EPA estimates US$2,700 a year for 15,000 miles.

Best uses

It suits a stretch between cars, by the week or the month. It suits a weekend away when the train does not reach where you are going.

Size and space

As a compact SUV, it sits higher than a sedan, which makes getting in and loading easier.

A longer test drive

If the Compass is in our fleet, its page shows the rates; if not, a similar car helps you judge. A week of your own driving tells you more than a test drive: the commute, the parking, the fuel. Nothing is charged until we confirm the rental and you approve the offer.

Picking a year and a trim

Look at a few listings of the same year and trim to get a feel for fair prices. Write down the VIN of any car you consider; it unlocks the recall and service history. Ask the seller which trim it is; badges can be swapped and options vary.

What it costs to run

At our price setting, 100 km costs about $14.42 in fuel. Ask what a set of tires costs for this trim; sizes and prices vary. The EPA estimates US$2,700 a year in fuel for 15,000 miles at US prices.
