Good habits for your car
Keep the spare, the jack and the wheel lock key where you can find them. Keep an emergency kit in the trunk in winter. Note the mileage when each service is done, so you know when the next is due.
Talking to the shop
Ask the shop to call you before doing anything not on the estimate. Ask the shop to explain the repair in plain words before you agree. Ask whether the estimate includes tax and shop supplies.
