The 2019 Honda Civic EX for buyers

No 2019 Honda Civic EX is for sale by CarmaCars at the moment; this page helps you judge the car before you buy one elsewhere. This page puts the 2019 Honda Civic EX in plain words for buyers: what it uses, what to check, and how to try one first.

What to check on the Civic

Owners filed 455 complaints with NHTSA, most often about steering, fuel/propulsion system and fuel system; have those parts checked. In Ontario, a used car needs a Safety Standards Certificate to be registered. A pre-purchase inspection at a shop you choose is money well spent. Look at the tires, brakes and battery; they are costly to replace.

    The figures, translated

The powertrain to know here is the 1.5L 4-cylinder turbo, with front-wheel drive. The turbo gives a small engine the pull of a bigger one when you need it. With front-wheel drive, the weight of the engine sits over the driven wheels, which helps in winter.

Plan on about 21 litres per 300 km; the combined rating is 6.9 L/100 km. For 1,000 km, budget about $107 at our price setting. The EPA estimates US$1,960 a year in fuel for 15,000 miles.

    Who the Civic suits

It suits a stretch between cars, by the week or the month. It suits a weekend away when the train does not reach where you are going.

    Space and size

Its car body is low and settled, with a separate trunk. EPA lists 736 litres of luggage space, enough for bulky luggage, a stroller or sports gear.

Drive it on your own roads

If it is in our fleet, rent it; if not, a similar car gives you a feel for the class. Load it with your things and park it where you park; then decide. A week of your own driving tells you more than a test drive: the commute, the parking, the fuel.

    Which one to look for

Set a budget that includes tax, licensing, insurance and the first set of tires. Compare the EX with the other trims of the same year before you decide. Decide what matters most first: fuel use, space, or the price you can pay.

    The cost of driving it

The EPA estimates US$1,960 a year in fuel for 15,000 miles at US prices. At our price setting, 100 km costs about $10.70 in fuel. Ask what a set of tires costs for this trim; sizes and prices vary.
