Buying the 2020 Honda Civic LX

No 2020 Honda Civic LX is for sale by CarmaCars at the moment; this page helps you judge the car before you buy one elsewhere. Here is the 2020 Honda Civic LX for buyers: fuel use, size, recalls and a test drive that lasts a week.

Before you sign for the Civic

Owners filed 236 complaints with NHTSA, most often about electrical system, unknown or other and power train; have those parts checked. Look at the tires, brakes and battery; they are costly to replace. NHTSA lists 5 recall campaigns for this model; ask the seller for proof each one was fixed. Have a mechanic inspect a used one before you buy it.

    The numbers in plain words

Power comes from the 1.5L 4-cylinder turbo, driving through an automatic (CVT). The turbo gives a small engine the pull of a bigger one when you need it. With front-wheel drive, the weight of the engine sits over the driven wheels, which helps in winter.

Rated at 6.9 L/100 km combined, it needs around 21 litres for a 300 km round trip. At our price setting, it costs about $10.70 to drive 100 km. At US fuel prices, the EPA estimates US$1,960 a year for 15,000 miles.

    What the Civic is like

Its car body is low and settled, with a separate trunk. Luggage space is rated at 736 litres: bulky luggage, a stroller or sports gear.

    When the Civic makes sense

It suits anyone who needs a car for a few days, a week or a month without buying one. It suits a weekend away when the train does not reach where you are going.

Drive it on your own roads

Renting first costs a fraction of the price of buying the wrong car. Rent it, live with it for a week, and decide with real experience. Rent first, buy later: a week with the Civic answers the big questions.

    Money matters

At our price setting, 100 km costs about $10.70 in fuel. Ask what a set of tires costs for this trim; sizes and prices vary. A 1,000 km month costs roughly $107 at our price setting.

    Choosing the right one

Compare the LX with the other trims of the same year before you decide. Decide what matters most first: fuel use, space, or the price you can pay. Set a budget that includes tax, licensing, insurance and the first set of tires.
