The 2020 Honda Civic Type R: before you buy

CarmaCars rents cars and does not sell the 2020 Honda Civic Type R; this page helps you judge it before you buy one elsewhere. This page helps you judge the 2020 Honda Civic Type R before you buy one anywhere.

    Recalls and complaints

Ask for the service records and check open recalls by the VIN. A pre-purchase inspection at a shop you choose is money well spent. Look at the tires, brakes and battery; they are costly to replace. In Ontario, a used car needs a Safety Standards Certificate to be registered.

    The figures, translated

The 1.5L 4-cylinder turbo with front-wheel drive is the powertrain to look at. It runs on regular gas. With front-wheel drive, the weight of the engine sits over the driven wheels, which helps in winter.

By the EPA's combined rating of 6.9 L/100 km, 300 km takes about 21 litres. In energy, every 100 km costs about $10.70 at our price setting. EPA puts its fuel cost at US$1,960 a year for 15,000 miles at US prices.

    The Civic in everyday use

A car body like this keeps the weight low, so it feels settled on the highway. The trunk holds 736 litres by the EPA's count: bulky luggage, a stroller or sports gear.

    Who it is for

It suits a stretch of weeks between selling one car and buying the next. It suits a weekend away when the train does not reach where you are going.

Drive it on your own roads

Try the Civic on your commute, then decide. Rent it, live with it for a week, and decide with real experience. A test week in the Civic tells you more than any review.

    The cost of driving it

A 1,000 km month costs roughly $107 at our price setting. The EPA estimates US$1,960 a year in fuel for 15,000 miles at US prices. At our price setting, 100 km costs about $10.70 in fuel.

Picking a year and a trim

Write down the VIN of any car you consider; it unlocks the recall and service history. If two trims share a powertrain, the difference is equipment, which you can check in person. A newer year is not always better; check what changed before paying more for it.

    Farmbrook and the Civic

Farmbrook is about 509 km from Toronto, outside our delivery area. If you are starting from Toronto, rent the car here and drive it to Farmbrook.
