    Best uses

It suits a stretch between cars, by the week or the month. It suits someone whose own car is in the shop for a while.

    Living with the Carnival

It is the kind of vehicle that makes a family trip calmer.

    A longer test drive

A week of your own driving tells you more than a test drive: the commute, the parking, the fuel. Renting first costs a fraction of the price of buying the wrong car. Rent the Carnival for a week and see how it fits your life.

    Narrowing it down

Write down the VIN of any car you consider; it unlocks the recall and service history. Set a budget that includes tax, licensing, insurance and the first set of tires. Ask the seller which trim it is; badges can be swapped and options vary.

    What it costs to run

Ask what a set of tires costs for this trim; sizes and prices vary. A pre-purchase inspection is a small cost next to the price of the car. The EPA estimates US$3,050 a year in fuel for 15,000 miles at US prices.
