    The figures, translated

The powertrain to know here is the 3.5L 6-cylinder, with front-wheel drive. It runs on regular gas. With front-wheel drive, the weight of the engine sits over the driven wheels, which helps in winter.

Its combined rating is 10.7 L/100 km, which means roughly 32 litres for 300 km. A 300 km weekend costs about $49.77 in energy at our price setting. EPA puts its fuel cost at US$3,050 a year for 15,000 miles at US prices.

    Size and space

As a minivan, it puts space for people and luggage first.

    Good uses for the Carnival

It suits a stretch of weeks between selling one car and buying the next. It suits someone whose own car is in the shop for a while.

Rent it for a week first

Renting first costs a fraction of the price of buying the wrong car. A week of your own driving tells you more than a test drive: the commute, the parking, the fuel. Drive the Carnival on your commute before you commit to it.

    Running costs

At our price setting, 100 km costs about $16.59 in fuel. Ask what a set of tires costs for this trim; sizes and prices vary. The EPA estimates US$3,050 a year in fuel for 15,000 miles at US prices.

Picking a year and a trim

Write down the VIN of any car you consider; it unlocks the recall and service history. If you are unsure between two options, rent one of them for a week first. Set a budget that includes tax, licensing, insurance and the first set of tires.
