The 2019 Toyota Corolla SE: before you buy

CarmaCars rents cars and does not sell the 2019 Toyota Corolla SE; this page helps you judge it before you buy one elsewhere. The 2019 Toyota Corolla SE for buyers: what the numbers say, what to check, how to try it.

What to check on the Corolla

Check whether every recall was done, by the VIN, before you pay. Ask for the service records and check open recalls by the VIN. Look at the tires, brakes and battery; they are costly to replace. Owners filed 205 complaints with NHTSA, most often about power train, engine and air bags; have those parts checked.

The numbers in plain words

Power: the 2.0L 4-cylinder; drive: front-wheel drive. It runs on regular gas. Front-wheel drive is the usual layout for cars this size, predictable in the rain and the snow.

At 6.6 L/100 km combined, a 300 km drive takes roughly 20 litres of fuel. At our price setting, driving 100 km costs about $10.23, and a 300 km weekend about $30.69. EPA puts its fuel cost at US$1,850 a year for 15,000 miles at US prices.

What to expect from the Corolla

A car body like this keeps the weight low, so it feels settled on the highway. In plain terms, its 510 litres of luggage space hold a family's bags for a long weekend.

Best uses

It suits people curious about the model who want to drive it before they buy. It suits a stretch of weeks between selling one car and buying the next.

Drive it on your own roads

Load it with your things and park it where you park; then decide. Rent the Corolla first, and buy only if it fits your life. Renting first costs a fraction of the price of buying the wrong car.

Running costs

Get an insurance quote for this exact model before you buy; rates differ a lot between models. The EPA estimates US$1,850 a year in fuel for 15,000 miles at US prices. Ask what a set of tires costs for this trim; sizes and prices vary.

Narrowing it down

If two trims share a powertrain, the difference is equipment, which you can check in person. Compare the SE with the other trims of the same year before you decide. Decide what matters most first: fuel use, space, or the price you can pay.
