    The figures, translated

The engine is the 2.0L 4-cylinder, with front-wheel drive and a 10-speed automatic. It runs on regular gas. With front-wheel drive, the weight of the engine sits over the driven wheels, which helps in winter.

Rated at 6.6 L/100 km combined, it needs around 20 litres for a 300 km round trip. For 1,000 km, budget about $102.30 at our price setting. At US fuel prices, the EPA estimates US$1,900 a year for 15,000 miles.

    What the Corolla is like

Being a compact car, it is easy to park and comfortable on longer drives. The trunk holds 510 litres by the EPA's count: a family's bags for a long weekend.

    Who rents the Corolla

It suits someone whose own car is in the shop for a while. It suits visitors who want a familiar car for a week in town.

Rent it for a week first

Renting first costs a fraction of the price of buying the wrong car. Rent first, buy later: a week with the Corolla answers the big questions. If it is in our fleet, rent it; if not, a similar car gives you a feel for the class.

    The cost of driving it

A 1,000 km month costs roughly $102.30 at our price setting. A pre-purchase inspection is a small cost next to the price of the car. At our price setting, 100 km costs about $10.23 in fuel.

    Narrowing it down

Look at a few listings of the same year and trim to get a feel for fair prices. Set a budget that includes tax, licensing, insurance and the first set of tires. Compare the LE with the other trims of the same year before you decide.

    A note on Java

We rent from Toronto only. If your trip to Java starts in the Toronto area, rent the car here. Java is about 1,474 km from Toronto, outside our delivery area.
