Thinking of buying the 2021 Toyota Corolla LE?

We are a rental company, not a dealer, so there is no 2021 Toyota Corolla LE for sale by us right now. Here is what to know about the 2021 Toyota Corolla LE before buying one.

Before you sign for the Corolla

Ask for the service records and check open recalls by the VIN. NHTSA has 187 owner complaints on file, mostly about air bags, engine and unknown or other. Have a mechanic inspect a used one before you buy it. Look at the tires, brakes and battery; they are costly to replace.

    The figures, translated

The 2.0L 4-cylinder with front-wheel drive is the powertrain to look at. It runs on regular gas. With front-wheel drive, the weight of the engine sits over the driven wheels, which helps in winter.

Rated at 6.6 L/100 km combined, it needs around 20 litres for a 300 km round trip. In energy, every 100 km costs about $10.23 at our price setting. The EPA estimates US$1,900 a year in fuel for 15,000 miles.

    Practical details

A car body like this keeps the weight low, so it feels settled on the highway. The EPA lists 510 litres for luggage, roughly a family's bags for a long weekend.

    Best uses

It suits someone whose own car is in the shop for a while. It suits a stretch between cars, by the week or the month.

Drive it on your own roads

A test week in the Corolla tells you more than any review. If it is in our fleet, rent it; if not, a similar car gives you a feel for the class. Rent the Corolla for a week, or up to 365 days, before you commit to buying one.

    What it costs to run

Ask what a set of tires costs for this trim; sizes and prices vary. The EPA estimates US$1,900 a year in fuel for 15,000 miles at US prices. At our price setting, 100 km costs about $10.23 in fuel.

Picking a year and a trim

A newer year is not always better; check what changed before paying more for it. Write down the VIN of any car you consider; it unlocks the recall and service history. Set a budget that includes tax, licensing, insurance and the first set of tires.
