Buying the 2021 Toyota Corolla SE

CarmaCars is a rental company and does not have the 2021 Toyota Corolla SE for sale right now. Rent one for a week first, or ask us to look for one. This page sets out the 2021 Toyota Corolla SE for buyers, in plain words.

    Recalls and complaints

Check whether every recall was done, by the VIN, before you pay. NHTSA has 187 owner complaints on file, mostly about air bags, engine and unknown or other. A private seller in Ontario must give you a Used Vehicle Information Package. Ask the seller for the service records of this exact car.

    What the figures tell you

The 2.0L 4-cylinder with front-wheel drive is the powertrain to look at. It runs on regular gas. Front-wheel drive is the usual layout for cars this size, predictable in the rain and the snow.

A combined rating of 6.6 L/100 km works out to about 20 litres per 300 km. The fuel for 100 km comes to about $10.23 at our price setting. At US fuel prices, the EPA estimates US$1,900 a year for 15,000 miles.

    Practical details

A car body like this keeps the weight low, so it feels settled on the highway. The EPA measures its luggage space at 510 litres, roughly a family's bags for a long weekend.

    Good uses for the Corolla

It suits a weekend away when the train does not reach where you are going. It suits a family trip where everyone and everything fits in one car.

    Try before you buy

Rent the Corolla first, and buy only if it fits your life. A test week in the Corolla tells you more than any review. Rent the Corolla for a week, or up to 365 days, before you commit to buying one.

    Running costs

The EPA estimates US$1,900 a year in fuel for 15,000 miles at US prices. Ask what a set of tires costs for this trim; sizes and prices vary. A pre-purchase inspection is a small cost next to the price of the car.

    Which one to look for

Compare the SE with the other trims of the same year before you decide. Look at a few listings of the same year and trim to get a feel for fair prices. Set a budget that includes tax, licensing, insurance and the first set of tires.
