    What the figures tell you

The 2.0L 4-cylinder, paired with a 10-speed automatic, drives it. It runs on regular gas. With front-wheel drive, the weight of the engine sits over the driven wheels, which helps in winter.

The EPA rates it at 6.6 L/100 km combined, so a 300 km weekend uses about 20 litres. At our price setting, 1,000 km costs about $102.30. At US fuel prices, the EPA estimates US$1,900 a year for 15,000 miles.

    Space and size

It is a straightforward car to drive, park and live with. The EPA measures its luggage space at 510 litres, roughly a family's bags for a long weekend.

    Who the Corolla suits

It suits people curious about the model who want to drive it before they buy. It suits someone whose own car is in the shop for a while.

    A longer test drive

Rent it, live with it for a week, and decide with real experience. Rent the Corolla first, and buy only if it fits your life. A week of your own driving tells you more than a test drive: the commute, the parking, the fuel.

    What it costs to run

The EPA estimates US$1,900 a year in fuel for 15,000 miles at US prices. Get an insurance quote for this exact model before you buy; rates differ a lot between models. Tires, brakes and batteries are the regular costs to budget for beyond fuel.

Picking a year and a trim

Decide what matters most first: fuel use, space, or the price you can pay. A newer year is not always better; check what changed before paying more for it. Write down the VIN of any car you consider; it unlocks the recall and service history.
