Buying the 2021 Toyota Corolla SE

We are a rental company, not a dealer, so there is no 2021 Toyota Corolla SE for sale by us right now. Before buying the 2021 Toyota Corolla SE, read what the figures say and how to try one first.

What to check on the Corolla

Ask for the service records and check open recalls by the VIN. NHTSA has 187 owner complaints on file, mostly about air bags, engine and unknown or other. There are 1 NHTSA recall campaigns on file; a dealer can check by the VIN whether each was done. A private seller in Ontario must give you a Used Vehicle Information Package.

    Engine and fuel

The powertrain here is the 2.0L 4-cylinder with front-wheel drive and a 10-speed automatic. It runs on regular gas. Front-wheel drive is the usual layout for cars this size, predictable in the rain and the snow.

Rated at 6.6 L/100 km combined, it needs around 20 litres for a 300 km round trip. Expect about $10.23 per 100 km at our price setting. EPA puts its fuel cost at US$1,900 a year for 15,000 miles at US prices.

    What the Corolla is like

As a compact car, it has a closed trunk that keeps luggage out of sight. EPA lists 510 litres of luggage space, enough for a family's bags for a long weekend.

    Who the Corolla suits

It suits someone whose own car is in the shop for a while. It suits a work trip where a reliable car matters more than anything else.

    A longer test drive

Renting first costs a fraction of the price of buying the wrong car. A test week in the Corolla tells you more than any review. A week with the Corolla answers more than any brochure.

    What it costs to run

A pre-purchase inspection is a small cost next to the price of the car. A 1,000 km month costs roughly $102.30 at our price setting. The EPA estimates US$1,900 a year in fuel for 15,000 miles at US prices.

    Narrowing it down

If two trims share a powertrain, the difference is equipment, which you can check in person. Write down the VIN of any car you consider; it unlocks the recall and service history. Ask the seller which trim it is; badges can be swapped and options vary.
